Our Appliquettes bee had a special lesson today. Rebecca S. gave us a lesson on Hawaiian applique. Rebecca is a great teacher and is in our bee. She loves Hawaiian applique. The Hawaiians learned applique from English settlers when they colonized the islands. The Hawaiians started using their traditional designs in fabric.
Basically, Hawaiian applique is just like regular needle turn hand applique, but uses the traditional Hawaiian motifs. They are usually nature inspired, and are traditionally two colors. However, Rebecca loves to use fabric from
Marit Kucera, a hand dyer. Her hand dyed fabrics are gorgeous. She does many in a circular design with a whitish ghost shadow, and she puts them in pairs that work well together.
The trick to Hawaiian applique is in the folding, and cutting. It's kind of like doing the paper snowflakes. And with these fabrics, decided which will be the top and which will be the bottom.
